Abundant Life

 

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I have come that they may have life and have it to the full!

 

In my preparation to teach on "Surrendering Sin" I had a total revelation on how God looks at sin. I have often felt like God is very angry with me and that my sin can somehow manipulate him... I know it sounds crazy! But, recently I feel much more like God loves me deeply and sees my sin as something that keeps me from being free and on that basis hates it when I sin and hates what my sin does to me, but loves me and really wants my freedom and abundant life. Seeing God this way and letting it overcome more of my perspective has really brought an abundance of freedom and joy to my life. I view my sin not as something that will make God angry and want to punish me but as something that is keeping me from the true freedom and joy that God desires for me and really for us all to have. So take that sin! God is in the business of restoring and rebuilding; redemption, not destruction. Sure he disciplines those he loves, but in order to bring about holiness which is life! The more time I spend thinking about God and reading his amazing word the deeper I fall in love with him and the more I see how incredible his love is for us! What a joy it is to be a follower of Christ!

 

Okay, well that was what was on my heart and I just had to blog it out :).

 

MK has been amazing! Last week was a very busy week for me and thusly was a very awesome week! Anytime I get to spend hours with these great kids is a good time! I love my job... don't know if you could tell. Bellow are the pictures from the service project that we did this past weekend. In true MK fashion we have a kid holding a snake, a kid crawling under the deck and then kids posing epicly. It was great to bless the community and the to be blessed by the goodies (cookies, and such) that each place of work poured out on us.  

 

 

 

 

Here is a wonderful picture of my wife snuggled up on Sunday afternoon; while I watch football she watches her eyelids. I really like how our cat is the same color as the blanket and it is perfect that the pillow she has her head on is also black and white. Poor thing is freezing in this sub arctic 70 degree weather. Love you Diane and I think you are amazing and cute and I'm so thankful for you!

 

Please pray for her as she struggles through the sickness that being pregnant bestows on her. 

 

 

 

Here I am with my amazing new cousin's baby. So.... well.... not sure how we are related technically speaking, I'm just glad that she is cute and I got to see her on Monday. She was born Sunday to my cousin Sami and his wife, their first child. When we got to the hospital I ran into the room and stiff armed Diane out of the way and picked up this little bundle of cuteness and joy and after she had touched down in my arms long enough I handed her off to Diane. Okay, maybe there were too many football metaphors in that last sentence. 

Life is good and I praise God for it. This has been a really great week and I'm looking forward to fall festivals with my kids this weekend. Creed has one tonight at his school, and then tomorrow is the epic chili festival at our church, where to celebrate the amazing chili we dress up and also go around and gather candy. Not sure what that has to do with chili but we do it anyway.

It is nice to have Fall weather and good people to share it with!

Mark has a lot of school all the time, pray for him to not burn out and to find great joy and success in his work.

Joel is moving out, pray for his transitions as he continues to find his way in this amazing world!

For Diane as she grows a small urchin in her belly... urchin here means child so don't worry about her health or anything...

Another week in paradise!

I guess that really just means that I love what I do and I’m so thankful to God for his great mercy and kindness towards me that he lets me do what I love!

What a great week! I had a great time with the MK’s on Monday studying culture. I realized that I have some really funny stories pertaining to cultural balance, but I also have some really painful ones. It’s hard making transitions to different places and always feeling like you just don’t quite fit in and don’t quite know what you should do. Thankfully I had a great older sister to help me figure out some things along the way. I realized that so much of our ability to understand culture springs from a humble spirit that desires to ‘be all things to all men’. We should be in the business of showing people Christ, they can’t see him if our poor balancing act is stealing the show!

Anyway, 'MK issues I’m passionate about' maybe a good title for another blog but I won’t ramble on too much about them here. Great week! we played a game where the kids had to put Vaseline on their faces and try and stick cotton balls to them and then shake them off in a bowl. It was hilarious!

Tuesday was a very special treat, Diane and I got to go with Marks Choir to see Lion King the musical. It was amazing… the giraffes… oh the amazing giraffes. There was an annoying cell phone blaring in my face for a few moments during the opening, but I had no problem taking care of the situation.

 

 

Wednesday I got my good old boss back from Jamaica and I really enjoyed visiting with him. I love you Bob! We are going to Ellen’s Amusement (mini golf, go-karts) tonight with the youth and so I was putting rides and such together all week. This coming Monday we are taking off because of ‘fair day’ and I think our family might actually go to the fair. I’m looking forward to braving the train with the boys… the train here goes right to the front door of the fair.
Sunday I have the great joy of going to the football game between the Cowboys and Redskins. I’m really excited for the chance to take some good friends to the stadium for the first time. Standing room only but the tickets were free. God is so good! I know it’s football… groan if you mustJ.

MK gets a little Messy

Perhaps this picture is the bet part of my blog and you should look at it for a couple more minutes and call it a day :).

This game night was so fun... perhaps epic is the word to use here. We got so messy and disgusting with water balloons, raw eggs, and shaving cream we just felt like... well, like kids again. Of course as the author of the game night I got the brunt of the messy gunk on me... raw eggs were smashed with abandon on my head as well as shaving cream sprayed and balloons hurled. It's good to be a youth pastor!

  

 

This has been a great week so far. This game night was last Friday and it was a really great bonding time. I can't remember the last time we did something like this with the MK's, but I will say that I really dislike filling up water balloons. I was really grateful that one of our star volunteers came over and helped me (thanks Nadia). After filling countless water balloons, since so many break, my own kids dreams of having an epic water balloon fight were postponed. So if any of you want to come over and fill balloons for them please feel free.

My parents are here and I helped them move to their 'permanent' shelter today. Permanent while they are state side. It is great to have this job now because I have more flexibility to help them during the day and to get to see them.

Diane is still struggling through morning sickness, please keep her in your prayers. Apparently having a baby is really hard work :). I'm so proud of you D! My back feels amazing, your prayers are really helping! I feel more normal now then I have in months! I could say I'm at 90% and not be stretching the truth!

Bob, my good boss man Bob, is in Jamaica this week preparing for our mission trip next year and tying up some lose ends from last trip and so I'm here holding down the fort. I miss having him in the office.

MK is going really well, I really enjoy all the activities I'm involved in and we are getting a lot more kids coming this year which is really encouraging and fun! I'm also pumped about the small group that Diane and I lead, I feel very blessed and I'm so grateful for you all making this dream possible for me and my family.

My trip to Thailand is finally on the horizon! I have the dates locked down for the end of January through the beginning of February 2014. I'm really looking forward to seeing those wonderful MK's over there! Last time I went I really felt God encouraging me to take the leap into full time ministry and in the mountains of Chang Mai he reminded me to 'lift my eyes up to the mountains and remember that my help comes from Him'. Good lesson for sure! I'm excited to see what he will teach me this trip and eager for him to use me!

This trip is going to cost $2500 for the airfare and room and board. My kids are doing well, they love having grandparents around! Mark (my brother in law) is a joy to have around and he is in the thick of school and choir but still doing great, getting sleep is a challenge sometimes but other then that he's good. Joel is back in the garage and looking for direction in his future endeavors. I'm so proud of how he has gotten a car and a job and is slowly discovering what God has for him on this side of the ocean. I enjoy having him around! He is learning to follow God one step at a time without worrying.

Another Rainy Day

This past Monday was our first MK of the new year and it went better than expected. We had twice as many kids as I thought we would and it was great trying to get us all squished into the small meeting room we are now using. We initially had way too few seats, and that I would say is a good problem to have. 

We studied 'what it means to be an MK' and did an activity where the kids could put on paper what they thought about the country that their families were working in. It was really fun to see all the things they came up with... and I have their posters in my office now... I feel like a dad putting up pictures on his fridge. 

The night ran really smoothly and everything started and ended on time which is amazing! I'm really looking forward to a great year. We will do an MK specific lesson the first week of each month and are studying Francis Chan's "Surrender" series during the rest of the month. 

My parents returned safely and jet lagged and are already heading off for a conference this weekend in Oklahoma. It's so good to have them home for a little while and my kids are so excited to see them. Asher spotted them first and ran out of child care to give them a big hug. He is definitely my most affectionate child. 

Diane is pregnant (cheering and much rejoicing and fanfare and fireworks) again with our 4th child and she is struggling through morning sickness right now, poor thing. She went home yesterday and just slept for most of the day, but she is tough and is trying to get some stuff done this morning at the office. 

My back is doing much better, I feel that I'm 'over the hump' which means that I have more good times than bad throughout the day. I can sit and when I get up I can get back to walking normally after only a few steps and I'm not in constant pain. I'm working out again which is nice and my stretching is really helping. Thanks for your prayers! 

Kelsey is coming to visit today and I'm looking forward to seeing her and her boyfriend Patrick! They will spend the weekend with us and it will be nice for them to see Diane so close to her birthday, which was this past Wednesday. I'm no Diane when it comes to birthdays but we did buy her an apple pie and sing to her and I took her out for lunch and the kids and I and Joel (who is really quite artistic) and Mark (sort of, he has good intentions) made her cards. I also read her an awesome poem that I found in a book that I gave her as a wedding present. Overall it was a good day although she was feeling a little sick during it. 

For her big surprise party (which was last Friday and only the events were a surprise) we went out to this neat restaurant called Zannata's (or something with a Z) they make amazing pizza. After that we went sailing, it was hard to find the place where the boat was... you may be thinking 'just look for water' but let me remind you we are in Texas and there isn't much of it. However, we made it to the boat and it all worked out great. She is 29 for the 3rd time? no she isn't like that... she is 31 and proud of it. At least I hope she is :). It was nice to carpool with our good friends the Johnson's, it was nice to get to sit next to Diane and hold her hand and focus on her not the road. 

Our first MK small group that Diane and I co-lead, was great. We had a good number of kids show up and the study was a lot of fun. I really enjoy getting to spend time with these amazing MK's. We are going to be studying 'Apologetic's' with Matt Chandler the pastor of the Village Church, he is also going to co-lead... or rather we are using his video series.  

Today we are blessed with rain here in Dallas; it threw my awesome, messy, game night plans out the window but that is okay, I now have other plans that include mainly taking care of my amazing wife. Diane I'm so proud of you and so thankful for you and happy that you are the strong amazing woman that you are and can carry our precious children (and that I don't have to). 

God is good and is leading my family beside still waters and is restoring my soul... sounds like something a good shepherd would do :). 

Bless you guys thanks so much for being a part of my adventure. I wake up most every day with a smile because I get to do this amazing job and I couldn't do it without you! I have the greatest job in the world and I have the best supporters in the world!

Fall here we come!

Home has been hard to find on the weekends of late. Two weekends ago my family was at Sky Ranch for the MK fall kick off the year get away, and this last weekend we were in Austin visiting supporters and introducing my Thailand recruits to the leaders of the Thailand trip.

 

But first things first... let's talk about Sky Ranch.

 

This year I got to ride down with a former youth group member, now leader, in the group named Nadia. It was great getting to talk to her on the way there and back, I love getting to know the people who I work with better, and it so happened that she was a big part in the weekend to come.

 

It was a privilege getting to have my family join me at Sky this year for the first time. I was a little worried that they would be distracting, but it turned out to be a wonderful experience having them there! Diane really got into the spirit of the weekend and the MKs loved having her there, and my kids loved being there, we had a girl, Claire, take care of them during the sessions and games but we had lots of fun free time with them in the pool and at meal times. They fit right in and the MKs were so loving toward them! My two favorite memories of time with my family were in the pool playing with Creed, Asher and a bunch of MKs and on this giant land pillow/blob watching Liam run across it and then face plant. Good times.

 

  

 

One of the things I look forward to at Sky Ranch is getting to be in the Skits we do before the message and worship time!

 

 

 

                           

                                                                              

 

 

The games are also a highlight for me, unfortunately because of my back injury I couldn't play, but Diane did a great job in the games, especially capture the flag!

 

 

 

Creed and Asher really like playing mini golf, Creed even brought his own clubs... sadly he forgot to bring them up before we played... oh well he still had a lot of fun!

So that was Sky, a wonderful time. My messages on the Matthew 5-7 went very well as did the worship and all the rest of it. The newcomers got to meet and spend time with the veteran MKs and I believe that God heard your prayers and gave us our best Sky yet. There were no problems with the kids and things ran quite smoothly the whole time. Monday while we were leaving it rained quite a bit on us giving us the perfect MK send off.

 

Now back to Nadia and our conversation in the van. In passing I asked her if she could pop over and check on our kids while we were in Austin the following weekend, well she not only popped over but spent most of the weekend over there watching and caring for our kids. Now we trust that Mark and Joel could have handled it but it gave us a great sense of peace knowing that Nadia was there to fill in the gaps! It made the whole weekend in Austin better for us knowing that our kids had so many fun people to care for them while we were gone. A big huge gigantic thank you to Nadia and Mark and Joel for making it possible for us to get away.

 

Austin

 

We went to Austin with our good Friends Michael and Michal who are going to help me in Thailand this next year. I'm really looking forward to having them on the trip and was very thankful that I could introduce them to David and Kathy Siek who are veterans of the Thailand trip. In the picture bellow it goes David, Michal, Michael, Caleb, Kathy.

 

 

When we got to Austin one of the things that we wanted to do was explore the city so Kathy, the tour guide extraordinaire, got out her laptop and found many amazing things for us to do. First thing we did was go to the train station and ride down town. I love trains and that was a great experience for me. We then walked to this restaurant called Bangers, and I enjoyed a nice meal of Bangers and Mash! After that we walked around 6th Street and soaked in the culture, one of the fun things was getting to eat at a famous food trailer that has some incredible donuts. 

 

 

We were exhausted when we finally got back home that night and enjoyed sleeping in the next morning without having to get up to our precious Liam at 6:30am saying "eat, eat mommy eat!"

 

We gradually collected ourselves and headed out to a car show where Diane found a car with her namesake. It was fun walking around and seeing the cool cars from past to present. Mostly Mustangs, but there were some other Fords there as well. Then the boys went home to enjoy College Football while the girls explored the Hill Country with Kathy. They had a great time and came back with some goodies they found at a fun shopping place off the highway.

 

 

The next day we enjoyed a great time at church and then headed back downtown for a guided tour of the city on a Duck boat. This thing drove us all around the city telling us the history of this and that and then drove into the lake and puttered around and then drove back out and off  again. They gave us duck whistles? or something like that which my kids are now enjoying much to their delight and our well... their delight.

 

 

After the tour I was happy to head back home and enjoy the first NFL Sunday. The evening was beautifully capped off with a Cowboys win and I slept very well that night. Monday came and before we left we enjoyed one more adventure visiting some local caves. Another fun tour guide showed us around some very interesting caves and then we headed back to pack up and with mixed emotions we headed home. It's always great fun visiting the Sieks and it's always hard to leave and get back to reality, but I really was missing my boys and it was good to get home and see them.

 





 

 

This week has been great fun so far. My back is getting better every day and I'm feeling close to normal again. I'm enjoying preparing my lessons for MK youth group and small group. The Lord is really pouring out his blessing on us and you are such a huge part of that! Thank you for your support, your prayers and your love! It is so special to have you all in my life.

 

Tomorrow my parents get back and in about a week my wife will celebrate her birthday. I'm looking forward to all of the above!

Summer of travel!

Mercy Me

No sooner had I gotten back from Jamaica then my wife packed up and moved out... well, maybe that's a little too dramatic... she went to see her sister in St. Louis. Lisa and Kyle just had their first baby (Jack) and they are such a cute family. Diane, like any good aunt, just had to go see the new baby. So I was without the bride of my youth for quite some time. But, that is okay, sharing is caring :). 

One of our favorite things to do as a family is go to the zoo. While I was in Jamaica my family went to the zoo and in the 'Lost' shirt back there is Joel Satre who is becoming an honorary member of the Robbins clan. It is wonderful having him around to help out with the kids and other things while Diane or I are off on one of our adventures. He is back from Cameroon and is staying with us while he figures out what the next phase of his life will be. Car, job, apartment and launched. I love it when God puts people together who need each other. I know we have been blessed by him and I'm sure he is by us :). 

Back from paradise and into the reality of being a youth pastor again. Step one, get the rest of the summer plans under way; service projects and outings all crammed into a 3 week period. One of our service projects was volunteering at the North Texas Food Bank; that was great, but it took its toll on my back. Then we went to Hawaiian Falls, which is a water park if you couldn't tell :), then we enjoyed a day at the ball park watching the Rangers make an epic come back against the Brewers, it was also $1 hot dog night ;). I don't enjoy baseball unless it's the playoffs or I'm there, and my wife in true Gebauer fashion brought a buffet fit for 9 innings of bliss. Yes it tastes as incredible as it sounds, each inning a new treat is revealed! Roxanne, you would be proud!

You can see the tarp on the field. The rain soaked us on our way there but it was so much better then having the sun beat down on us! It was a nice cool evening and we enjoyed having Mark with us freshly back and jet lagged from the Solomon Islands. This week we got him registered, phoned (not sure that makes sense... we got him a phone... but now the word phoned has been given meaning, feel free to use it), and shopped up for the start of school next week. 

Speaking of school starting, Creed has already been in school for a week. First grade, wow he is so cute and loves school. He has to read every day for 20 minutes. That is very cute... sometimes. I'm very proud of him. There he is with mom before heading off. Also, David my other brother in law, leaves for College today! Wow!

So the last month or so has been a whirlwind, but it's all been great. Including my friend Brandon visiting for a couple of days... even got an extra day with him due to a flight cancellation. I really had a great time seeing him again, he lives in Minnesota and is one of those cool long distance gaming relationships that I'm sure we all have :). 

Work is going great, I love getting to do so many fun things with the kids. We finished up our summer program and have gotten things all ready for Sky Ranch our big fall kick off weekend. I got the calendar up for all the fall events and a power point done for our parents meeting this coming Monday. Then off to Sky and our schedule get's back to normal? Or something like that. 

I'm looking forward to having my whole family with me at Sky for the first time. I'm doing the speaking this year and the topic is taken from Matthew 5-7. Those chapters seem to flow together like a nice sermon... any body else ever notice that? Any way I'm looking forward to it.

Jamaica 2013

1 Cor 3:5-7

5 Who is Apollos? Who is Paul? They are servants who helped you come to faith. Each did what the Lord gave him to do. 6 I planted, and Apollos watered, but God made it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is important because ⌊only⌋ God makes it grow.

I definitely missed someone while I was in Jamaica... namely my beautiful wife. Last year we had a picture of us taken right here. I thought it would be fun to get another one... I have an imaginary wife :)

The kids and I had a blast at he hotel the night before we flew. We enjoyed a long and silly dinner at Denny's and then slept for a couple of hours before greeting the morning with the grogginess that 3 am always engenders. 

We actually landed early and thankfully Bob was there to meet us and whisk us away to Burger King and then some relaxation on the beach. It was a long day but a great day and I found sleep to be the faithful friend I remembered and didn't even see 9 pm. 

The next morning we spent at the infirmary praying for and loving on the old and dying. Also they love to beat us at dominoes. 

That afternoon we headed into the ghetto (Flankers) and finished painting and cleaning up the yard for an elderly woman. It amazed me how much trash there was to clean up. I really enjoyed seeing the dramatic change that we were able to bring to lady Sunshine's life. 

The next day was church, the thing I really enjoy about church in Jamaica is the worship and how easy it is to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. 

Monday we started out painting for the family to the right (Tony, Antoinette and 4 kids). The house looked great but what God really transformed was the relationships in the family. It was great working with the kids and the Jamaicans. I put my portable speaker in my backpack and became very popular... 'come back music man'... it was a great time! 

 Another ministry we brought to the neighborhood was our version of V.B.S. We had a group prepared with Bible lessons and games and the kids although wild learned a lot and had a lot of fun!

After we finished up painting the house we took a day to go to some local orphanages. Unfortunately right after we were dropped off our bus broke down. Thankfully the driver saw it coming and it was already at the mechanics shop when it stopped working. That meant that we stayed at the orphanage a little longer than we expected and the rest of our day got derailed. But God knew what he was doing and it ended up being a really great day. We got to meet some new people and spent some quality time at a local park waiting for our bus to get fixed. We ended up bonding with some kids from the youth group who had come along with us for the ride. We played charades and other fun games and my friends Sunshine and Henry made me a Jamaican remedy for back pain. It was really fun and slimy :).  

 

The next day we got back on our repaired bus and headed out to Westhaven a handicapped orphanage. This houses kids and adults who have been thrown away, literally, and relies heavily on volunteers and donations. It is always a pleasure to go and see the beautiful people there, they are usually smiling and eager to see you when you get off the bus. I remember lots of them from years past and it is fun to see them again. 

Last year we started the tradition of going to a member of the church's house for dinner. This year I got to go to the Oban's house, which was very nice. I really enjoyed the fellowship and the meal was spectacular. 

Monday came so quickly and the ten days we had spent there seemed like a blur. We gathered around in our circle and prayed for each other before loading back on the bus and heading off to the airport.

The highlight for me this year was getting to know the people that we work with on a much deeper level. I enjoyed hearing the stories of their lives and sharing their burdens with them through prayer. I was really touched by their love for us. They always want the best for us, they see the good we are trying to do and it touches them and they respond by making us back remedies :). 

It's good to be back... I have had a wonderful reunion with my family. I missed my kids and wife so much and I'm glad that I had this week with Diane before she left to go be with her sister Lisa who just had her first baby.

For the people of Jamaica that God will provide jobs for them and that their needs will be met both spiritually and physically. 

For Diane to have a great week with her sister. 

For me as I take care of the boys for a week on my own.

For me as I get ready for Sky Ranch (our big weekend away with the kids, I'm bringing the message) and start planning out the fall schedule.

Home safe and filled up! 

My back is getting much better... God is sustaining me in all the things he has given me to do!
