Fall here we come!

Home has been hard to find on the weekends of late. Two weekends ago my family was at Sky Ranch for the MK fall kick off the year get away, and this last weekend we were in Austin visiting supporters and introducing my Thailand recruits to the leaders of the Thailand trip.

But first things first... let's talk about Sky Ranch.

This year I got to ride down with a former youth group member, now leader, in the group named Nadia. It was great getting to talk to her on the way there and back, I love getting to know the people who I work with better, and it so happened that she was a big part in the weekend to come.

It was a privilege getting to have my family join me at Sky this year for the first time. I was a little worried that they would be distracting, but it turned out to be a wonderful experience having them there! Diane really got into the spirit of the weekend and the MKs loved having her there, and my kids loved being there, we had a girl, Claire, take care of them during the sessions and games but we had lots of fun free time with them in the pool and at meal times. They fit right in and the MKs were so loving toward them! My two favorite memories of time with my family were in the pool playing with Creed, Asher and a bunch of MKs and on this giant land pillow/blob watching Liam run across it and then face plant. Good times.

One of the things I look forward to at Sky Ranch is getting to be in the Skits we do before the message and worship time!

The games are also a highlight for me, unfortunately because of my back injury I couldn't play, but Diane did a great job in the games, especially capture the flag!

Creed and Asher really like playing mini golf, Creed even brought his own clubs... sadly he forgot to bring them up before we played... oh well he still had a lot of fun!

This is the group in all their glory!

So that was Sky, a wonderful time. My messages on the Matthew 5-7 went very well as did the worship and all the rest of it. The newcomers got to meet and spend time with the veteran MKs and I believe that God heard your prayers and gave us our best Sky yet. There were no problems with the kids and things ran quite smoothly the whole time. Monday while we were leaving it rained quite a bit on us giving us the perfect MK send off.

Now back to Nadia and our conversation in the van. In passing I asked her if she could pop over and check on our kids while we were in Austin the following weekend, well she not only popped over but spent most of the weekend over there watching and caring for our kids. Now we trust that Mark and Joel could have handled it but it gave us a great sense of peace knowing that Nadia was there to fill in the gaps! It made the whole weekend in Austin better for us knowing that our kids had so many fun people to care for them while we were gone. A big huge gigantic thank you to Nadia and Mark and Joel for making it possible for us to get away.

Austin

We went to Austin with our good Friends Michael and Michal who are going to help me in Thailand this next year. I'm really looking forward to having them on the trip and was very thankful that I could introduce them to David and Kathy Siek who are veterans of the Thailand trip. In the picture bellow it goes David, Michal, Michael, Caleb, Kathy.

When we got to Austin one of the things that we wanted to do was explore the city so Kathy, the tour guide extraordinaire, got out her laptop and found many amazing things for us to do. First thing we did was go to the train station and ride down town. I love trains and that was a great experience for me. We then walked to this restaurant called Bangers, and I enjoyed a nice meal of Bangers and Mash! After that we walked around 6th Street and soaked in the culture, one of the fun things was getting to eat at a famous food trailer that has some incredible donuts.

We were exhausted when we finally got back home that night and enjoyed sleeping in the next morning without having to get up to our precious Liam at 6:30am saying "eat, eat mommy eat!"

We gradually collected ourselves and headed out to a car show where Diane found a car with her namesake. It was fun walking around and seeing the cool cars from past to present. Mostly Mustangs, but there were some other Fords there as well. Then the boys went home to enjoy College Football while the girls explored the Hill Country with Kathy. They had a great time and came back with some goodies they found at a fun shopping place off the highway.

The next day we enjoyed a great time at church and then headed back downtown for a guided tour of the city on a Duck boat. This thing drove us all around the city telling us the history of this and that and then drove into the lake and puttered around and then drove back out and off  again. They gave us duck whistles? or something like that which my kids are now enjoying much to their delight and our well... their delight.

After the tour I was happy to head back home and enjoy the first NFL Sunday. The evening was beautifully capped off with a Cowboys win and I slept very well that night. Monday came and before we left we enjoyed one more adventure visiting some local caves. Another fun tour guide showed us around some very interesting caves and then we headed back to pack up and with mixed emotions we headed home. It's always great fun visiting the Sieks and it's always hard to leave and get back to reality, but I really was missing my boys and it was good to get home and see them.

This week has been great fun so far. My back is getting better every day and I'm feeling close to normal again. I'm enjoying preparing my lessons for MK youth group and small group. The Lord is really pouring out his blessing on us and you are such a huge part of that! Thank you for your support, your prayers and your love! It is so special to have you all in my life.

Tomorrow my parents get back and in about a week my wife will celebrate her birthday. I'm looking forward to all of the above!

Pray!

For me that I will seek God first in all things and look to Him for inspiration in loving and leading the Dallas MK youth group.

For Diane that she would have another fantastic year!

For Mark as school gets busier all the time.

For Joel as he looks for a job and place to stay.

Praise!

For you of course, everyday I praise God for you!

That Joel got a car!

That my back is getting better.

For my amazing wife! Happy birthday Diane, I know it's early but I'm so glad you are here and a part of my life!

Blessings to you all, may you enjoy the rest of the summer heat and may fall come quickly bringing its cooler temperatures.

Summer of travel!

Take this world from me I don't need it any more,
I am finally free my heart is spoken for...

Mercy Me

No sooner had I gotten back from Jamaica then my wife packed up and moved out... well, maybe that's a little too dramatic... she went to see her sister in St. Louis. Lisa and Kyle just had their first baby (Jack) and they are such a cute family. Diane, like any good aunt, just had to go see the new baby. So I was without the bride of my youth for quite some time. But, that is okay, sharing is caring :).

One of our favorite things to do as a family is go to the zoo. While I was in Jamaica my family went to the zoo and in the 'Lost' shirt back there is Joel Satre who is becoming an honorary member of the Robbins clan. It is wonderful having him around to help out with the kids and other things while Diane or I are off on one of our adventures. He is back from Cameroon and is staying with us while he figures out what the next phase of his life will be. Car, job, apartment and launched. I love it when God puts people together who need each other. I know we have been blessed by him and I'm sure he is by us :).

Back from paradise and into the reality of being a youth pastor again. Step one, get the rest of the summer plans under way; service projects and outings all crammed into a 3 week period. One of our service projects was volunteering at the North Texas Food Bank; that was great, but it took its toll on my back. Then we went to Hawaiian Falls, which is a water park if you couldn't tell :), then we enjoyed a day at the ball park watching the Rangers make an epic come back against the Brewers, it was also $1 hot dog night ;). I don't enjoy baseball unless it's the playoffs or I'm there, and my wife in true Gebauer fashion brought a buffet fit for 9 innings of bliss. Yes it tastes as incredible as it sounds, each inning a new treat is revealed! Roxanne, you would be proud!

You can see the tarp on the field. The rain soaked us on our way there but it was so much better then having the sun beat down on us! It was a nice cool evening and we enjoyed having Mark with us freshly back and jet lagged from the Solomon Islands. This week we got him registered, phoned (not sure that makes sense... we got him a phone... but now the word phoned has been given meaning, feel free to use it), and shopped up for the start of school next week.

Speaking of school starting, Creed has already been in school for a week. First grade, wow he is so cute and loves school. He has to read every day for 20 minutes. That is very cute... sometimes. I'm very proud of him. There he is with mom before heading off. Also, David my other brother in law, leaves for College today! Wow!

So the last month or so has been a whirlwind, but it's all been great. Including my friend Brandon visiting for a couple of days... even got an extra day with him due to a flight cancellation. I really had a great time seeing him again, he lives in Minnesota and is one of those cool long distance gaming relationships that I'm sure we all have :).

Work is going great, I love getting to do so many fun things with the kids. We finished up our summer program and have gotten things all ready for Sky Ranch our big fall kick off weekend. I got the calendar up for all the fall events and a power point done for our parents meeting this coming Monday. Then off to Sky and our schedule get's back to normal? Or something like that.

I'm looking forward to having my whole family with me at Sky for the first time. I'm doing the speaking this year and the topic is taken from Matthew 5-7. Those chapters seem to flow together like a nice sermon... any body else ever notice that? Any way I'm looking forward to it.

Pray!

For my back, this relapse is discouraging.
For my messages that God uses them to his glory!
For Sky Ranch to be amazing for the MK's!
For Joel that he can find a job and car and place to stay.
For Mark and David as they start school on Monday.

Praise!

Mark returned safely!
Our family is reunited!
For you who make all these things possible as you so generously offer your prayers and tithes to the Lord on my behalf! You are very dear to me!

I am so blessed to have the opportunity to love the people in my life and I'm looking forward to a great fall. I hope the Cowboys win lots of games... so glad that football is back! I couldn't help myself I had to mention that in this blog.

I hope that you all feel the deep love that our precious Lord and Savior has for each of you.

Surrender and obedience... let's never stop living in his love!

Blessings,

Caleb

Jamaica 2013

1 Cor 3:5-7

5 Who is Apollos? Who is Paul? They are servants who helped you come to faith. Each did what the Lord gave him to do. 6 I planted, and Apollos watered, but God made it grow. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is important because ⌊only⌋ God makes it grow.

I definitely missed someone while I was in Jamaica... namely my beautiful wife. Last year we had a picture of us taken right here. I thought it would be fun to get another one... I have an imaginary wife :)

The kids and I had a blast at he hotel the night before we flew. We enjoyed a long and silly dinner at Denny's and then slept for a couple of hours before greeting the morning with the grogginess that 3 am always engenders.

We actually landed early and thankfully Bob was there to meet us and whisk us away to Burger King and then some relaxation on the beach. It was a long day but a great day and I found sleep to be the faithful friend I remembered and didn't even see 9 pm.

The next morning we spent at the infirmary praying for and loving on the old and dying. Also they love to beat us at dominoes.

That afternoon we headed into the ghetto (Flankers) and finished painting and cleaning up the yard for an elderly woman. It amazed me how much trash there was to clean up. I really enjoyed seeing the dramatic change that we were able to bring to lady Sunshine's life.

The next day was church, the thing I really enjoy about church in Jamaica is the worship and how easy it is to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Monday we started out painting for the family to the right (Tony, Antoinette and 4 kids). The house looked great but what God really transformed was the relationships in the family. It was great working with the kids and the Jamaicans. I put my portable speaker in my backpack and became very popular... 'come back music man'... it was a great time!

Another ministry we brought to the neighborhood was our version of V.B.S. We had a group prepared with Bible lessons and games and the kids although wild learned a lot and had a lot of fun!

After we finished up painting the house we took a day to go to some local orphanages. Unfortunately right after we were dropped off our bus broke down. Thankfully the driver saw it coming and it was already at the mechanics shop when it stopped working. That meant that we stayed at the orphanage a little longer than we expected and the rest of our day got derailed. But God knew what he was doing and it ended up being a really great day. We got to meet some new people and spent some quality time at a local park waiting for our bus to get fixed. We ended up bonding with some kids from the youth group who had come along with us for the ride. We played charades and other fun games and my friends Sunshine and Henry made me a Jamaican remedy for back pain. It was really fun and slimy :).

The next day we got back on our repaired bus and headed out to Westhaven a handicapped orphanage. This houses kids and adults who have been thrown away, literally, and relies heavily on volunteers and donations. It is always a pleasure to go and see the beautiful people there, they are usually smiling and eager to see you when you get off the bus. I remember lots of them from years past and it is fun to see them again.

Last year we started the tradition of going to a member of the church's house for dinner. This year I got to go to the Oban's house, which was very nice. I really enjoyed the fellowship and the meal was spectacular.

Monday came so quickly and the ten days we had spent there seemed like a blur. We gathered around in our circle and prayed for each other before loading back on the bus and heading off to the airport.

I have posted all the videos I took on the trip as well as a slide show that I made on YouTube. My user name is Caleb Robbins and my videos all start with the title Jamaica 2013. Feel free to check them out.

The highlight for me this year was getting to know the people that we work with on a much deeper level. I enjoyed hearing the stories of their lives and sharing their burdens with them through prayer. I was really touched by their love for us. They always want the best for us, they see the good we are trying to do and it touches them and they respond by making us back remedies :).

It's good to be back... I have had a wonderful reunion with my family. I missed my kids and wife so much and I'm glad that I had this week with Diane before she left to go be with her sister Lisa who just had her first baby.

Pray!

For the people of Jamaica that God will provide jobs for them and that their needs will be met both spiritually and physically.

For Diane to have a great week with her sister.

For me as I take care of the boys for a week on my own.

For me as I get ready for Sky Ranch (our big weekend away with the kids, I'm bringing the message) and start planning out the fall schedule.

Praise!

Home safe and filled up!

My back is getting much better... God is sustaining me in all the things he has given me to do!

I praise God for you and your faithful support! I couldn't do this without you!

Blessings to you all! Thanks for sending me to Jamaica and for keeping me in your prayers while my wife is away.

June the month of recovery... July the return of superman :)

June was a whirl wind, and I'm amazed that it's not only over, but that by God's grace, I made it through it. I am sitting here... yeah that is a huge statement for me, sitting! and it feels so good to be on the trail to complete recovery. I feel like God is fulfilling his promises in my life in the most spectacular ways. He is burning up the chaff in my life so that he can build something of real quality. Take my back for example... I have been putting up with spotty patchwork for so long and praying and hoping for a miracle, well God broke me down and tore out all the ugly patches and is now allowing me to do the real work of transforming my back into something that is healthy and strong.

When I look back on June I think about all the people that surrounded me with prayers and encouragement and helped me get back on my feet, literally. It was a great time to discover strength in weakness and to think about identity. How can I be a youth pastor when I can barely stand? Well God gave me the strength to hobble through the activities he laid out before me and gave me the time to prepare and foster a deeper prayer and devotional life; qualities essential to pastoral ministry.

By this time last year my wife and I were on our way to Jamaica, now I'm excited to be going back on July 18th for ten days. I look forward to this every year, and I'm especially eager to see how God will provide for Mr. Whitter the gentleman we are raising money to get a leg for. I'm excited to see my friends the Englands and very eager to get to know the MKs that are going for the first time. There is nothing like a mission trip to bond a group. This year we are going to be painting a house for a family in the church and then visiting the orphanage, handicapped facility and Flankers.

The total cost for the trip is $1600 and it you are interested in partnering with me in this cost and in the work that I will be doing you can click on the tab at the top of the page "Supporting the Work". I'm so thankful for your partnership both financially and spiritually! I could not do the things that God has called me to do with out his calling in your life as well. Thank you so much!

Next week I'm looking forward to celebrating ten years of marriage to my beautiful Diane. I still remember like it was yesterday her graceful body gliding down the aisle toward me. Her beauty was overwhelming (and after three kids and ten years with me it's amazing that she is even more gorgeous today!) and I couldn't hold the tears back as I thought about how lucky I was to get to pledge my love to such a wonderful Godly woman and spend the rest of my life with her. As the tears of joy flowed down my cheeks I knew this was the best thing that God had yet given me and through her I have been blessed so much to get to share a family and an adventure with the prettiest girl inside and out that I have ever come across. Here's to you Diane my princess, my queen, the bride of my youth! You satisfy me, and through the ups and downs you have been the best friend that anyone could hope for and I'm looking forward to many more years with you!

I feel like so much has happened lately, I guess that is how life works when you can actually move around.

Well, two Tuesdays ago was the Cowan Car wash, which is one of my favorite service projects. I was a little nervous about pulling it off half crippled, but everything came off without a hitch, and it was great getting to serve with the kids and hang out at the pool afterwards.

The following Saturday was one of my families favorite events of the year "Celebrate Freedom" an outdoor all day concert at South Fork Ranch (where they filmed the TV show 'Dallas'). The weather was toasty but the bands were great, and the day was capped off with Toby Mac and Switchfoot. My wife went up to the front for Toby Mac... she is so cool! It was great to have Kelsey in town to go with us and that was Marks last day before he left to see his family for a month. The kids loved it as you can see from the pictures :). I really enjoyed seeing some of the MK's there, they love Switchfoot.

This last week in MK we studied how God's love is kind and it made me realize that I had been viewing God incorrectly lately. After my back injury and a myriad of other misfortunes I started feeling like God was punishing me for something I had done and stopped thinking about his kindness and how that leads us to repentance. It seems to me that God doesn't try and force us into something by threatening us, he woos us to himself by showing us kindness. Well, when I started focusing on that my perspective changed, and I began seeing the amazing kindness of God to me during this past month. One of the things that God used to help bring perspective to me was the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'. After watching that I was overwhelmed by God's goodness to me and all my problems seemed so little.

Monday passed and before I knew it Thursday was knocking on the door, and so I crawled out of bed and like so many other fathers got dragged to the Duncanville parade by my amazing wife. She really does so many good things for our kids and I'm glad that I get to be along for the ride. The parade was a lot of fun and a great way to start the 4th of July celebrating. I got donuts on the walk home and we had a restful morning together as a family cramming our faces full of sugar and watching the Cosby show.

After a fun day we packed up the family and headed off to enjoy an evening of Shakespeare in the Park. We have a good friend who works closely with the program and she was able to get us (a wonderful mix of good friends) great seats! We had a picnic on the lawn and after getting Creeds face painted and Liam to sleep we had a peaceful night watching fireworks light up the sky behind the actors.

Pray!
For my family while I am in Jamaica
For a good reunion between Mark and his family
For a good celebration with my wife... ten years... oh baby!

Praise!
God is healing me and renewing my spirit
God has protected Mark and his things in his journey thus far
Ten years of wonderful marriage... not sure I mentioned that yet :)

Alas it is Friday yet again and I'm in the midst of a wonderful four day weekend with my wife. I'm enjoying the extra time with her and the kids. As I look forward to the rest of July I think about what I'm learning and what God is doing and I want to leave you with this verse.

1 Cor 3:7-9a

7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9For we are co-workers in God’s service;

I praise God for you and pray for his blessings in your life. May we never forget that our work is that only of obedience and the results belong to God.

Summer I love you so much

Weather in Texas usually is killer by this time but let me tell you that God has given us a wonderful string of wet and cool days! I have my windows open and my fan on and it's a nice 75 outside with the sun peeking through my tree outside. I have a feeling that today is going to be a good day.

My back is doing much better and thanks to a long and fun day out in the sun at Burgers Lake yesterday it is also a little crispy. I'm enjoying a different sensation on my back :). The day out with the youth group yesterday was fantastic!

The rain delayed the plans for the day which is the only downside of the cool wet weather. My little boys all react to the water differently. Creed is slowly becoming a strong swimmer but his eyes are bigger than his swimming stomach? Or something like that. Asher is extremely timid and only feels safe in the water when he feels in control, he has to be able to stand on his own and doesn't want to be touched. The fish is Liam, the problem is he can't swim. Liam has no fear what so ever and probably would have acquired gills by now if we hadn't pulled him out of the water so many times. He just walks in over his head or runs off into the water and no matter how many times he comes up sputtering he does it again.

Here you can see the boys climbing the tree in the backyard and the neighbor boy is there with them. I love  seeing them outside playing instead of inside vegging.

Mark, my brother in law who is staying with us, is going through drivers ed and is doing great driving around town. I was teaching him to parallel park and then he drove very nicely back from the park. Then yesterday, he drove all over Duncanville with Diane, from the mall to the Sonic, and this after only driving a couple of times before. He is a natural and a huge help around the house!

Monday was a great day with the MK group, and Thursday was the outing to the lake and tonight is a game night at my house. I really enjoy getting to see the kids so often and getting to see them randomly at the center pool now that they are out of school (yeah I'm a poet).

Jamaica is coming soon and I'm really looking forward to getting back and really looking forward to getting some extra time with the MKs that are going this year. I remember watching the NBA finals over there two years ago and taking great joy in watching the Mavericks beat the heat in the home of a Heat fan... Well this year the Heat beat another Texas team and although I'm sad about that outcome I'm really happy for Joel my Jamaican brother!

Pray!

Full back movement by the time Jamaica gets hear!

Praise!

I thank God for your partnership in my ministry!
I thank God for the healing that he is doing in my body!

As I look back on the time since I left my job in faith that God would use you to provide for me, I marvel at how encouraging the journey has been. Thanks for walking faithfully with me during these months and for spreading the word to others. I am overjoyed that I am able to live my dream and do what God has called me to do and none of it is possible without you (still a poet :)!

Bless you all!

The waves of Life

I am still on my back in the snow with Creed on my chest... wait no um that's the picture, but I am still on my back just hanging out in my living room and thinking about the last two weeks of my life and when all is said and done my heart cries out 'God is Good'. But let me tell you, these two weeks have been difficult. Never before in my life have I had an injury like this one that has sidelined me for so long. I feel like I haven't quite been myself for a very long time and I'm getting used to being the guy that can't walk straight. This last week I have seen the most progress, which is good since I have been going to the chiropractor twice a day for two weeks. In fact, she felt so sorry for me last week that she saw me on her day off to help me get better.

This last week in particular has dealt some hard blows. On Saturday night my computer died, on Monday night my car broke in many expensive ways and after being on my back for so long and feeling frustrated by that it just seemed like a lot of stuff was piling on. The question can be "God what are you doing why his this happening?" but for some reason as I was getting out of my broken car and trying to get into my house with my broken back the cry of my heart was a lyric from a song "you are so good to me, you heal my broken heart... " and I don't know why other then the fact that God really does change our lives when we surrender them to him. The Holy Spirit isn't a joke it's a reality that turns your world upside down and gives you joy when you can't come up with a good reason to have it.

I am so thankful that right now as I type this, somehow, my car has been fixed and my bank account is okay, my back is feeling much better and I can walk more then twenty feet now without collapsing in agony, my computer was replaced and is working like a dream, but most of all there is a spirit of joy inside me giving me hope for what is to come.

In times like this I'm glad that my friends are much better than Job's friends. They haven't gathered around me and asked me to repent of the sin that caused all this in my life. They have surrounded me with love and grace and lifted my family up when we were in a dark place. Through prayers and encouragement, through sympathy and empathy, and through just the practical willingness to take me to the chiropractor. I am left feeling very grateful for the times I have had with them getting to know them better and learning how to enjoy letting others serve me and my family. We are a body and it is beautiful how we love each other.

Looking  back on this time, and I know it's not quite over yet, I'm so thankful for the things that God has done in my life. He has slowed me down a lot and has changed my perspective. When everything around me was breaking God was merciful and helped me to see the things in this world in their proper place. I was surprised at how calm I was and how much peace I had knowing that all these things would get taken care of. When you can't walk or move so many things seem so small in comparison. I'm also thankful for all the time I have had with my kids. I am really learning to like as well as love my kids. I'm spending lots of time watching shows with them and talking with them and getting to really know them better and I'm really liking it. God has used this time to help me become a more patient man also, as I wait and wait for my body to heal, and as all the things that I used to be able to do so quickly now take me a lot longer.

My job has been interesting of late. I have spent a lot of time preparing for the future lessons that I am going to teach. I have spent a lot of time missing being with the kids and being in my office. I was so thankful to be able to go to MK and was very grateful that months ago I had planned to have a guest speaker for that night so that I didn't have to try and find a way to teach from the floor :). God is good!

In all the times where I have felt the most frustrated and hopeless during this process I have had someone, often my wife, to tell me that things are going to get better and to trust God. I have had lots of things happen that could have been much worse and I have had the joy of living with a gracious community. I am a different person... mainly I feel shorter :) but I know that I am a better person. We have a choice when hard times come our way, we can be formed by them or we can be destroyed by them. I credit your prayers and love in my life as the reason that God is able to use this to form me. Thank you for walking this road with me.

I hope to be back to normal soon! Monday is coming and I would love to be able to teach from a standing position, and then the next day is a big outing. Jamaica is coming next month and I'm really looking forward to it and I want to be in good health to be able to really help out while there.

Speaking of Jamaica there is a man there who lost his job when he lost his leg and our hope is to be able to give him the money to get a new leg. We have started a fund raiser that gets you a cool shirt and as a result some of the money goes to a fund to get him a leg. Here is the link to getting the shirt if you are interested. Just copy it into your browser.
